About This Call
The City of Charlotte is seeking a professional artist to incorporate art into the Cornelius Park & Ride through the CATS Art-in-Transit program. In 2002, CATS' governing board established this program, committing 1% of design and construction budgets to the integration of public art in capital improvement projects in accordance with Federal Transportation Administration guidelines.
The Cornelius Park & Ride will be located at the intersection of Sefton Park Road and Norman Boulevard on the west side of I-77 Highway and will contain approximately 400 parking spots and a driver's comfort station. A primary art opportunity is the driver's comfort station, where artists may integrate art on the exterior of the building in collaboration with the project architect. However, artists are not limited to this option and may impact other areas of the site. CATS is seeking artists who create two- or three-dimensional art and are comfortable engaging local communities to ensure the resulting art resonates with parking lot patrons and the community. One artist will be selected for this project.
The art budget is $20,000, intended to cover the artist's fee, proposal, travel, meetings, insurance, and a design plan to be integrated into the project and built by others. The project is jointly funded by the Federal Transit Administration and the City of Charlotte. Professional artists living or working in North Carolina or South Carolina are eligible to apply; students are not eligible. A three-member selection panel of regional art professionals will review submissions based on past work and qualifications, considering excellence in quality of art or design, connection to site and adjacent community, impact on transit users and public, durability, safety and resistance to vandalism, and minimal maintenance requirements. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. EST on May 22, 2015, and include six art images, an annotated image sheet, a one-page resume or CV, a letter of intent (maximum 1000 words), and three professional references. There is no application fee.
