About This Call
Carson City is seeking an artist or artist team to design, fabricate, and install a free-standing, outdoor, original sculpture at the South Carson Street/South Stewart Street Roundabout. The City's Public Art Panel will select a project through a two-phase process. Phase 1 evaluation will establish a pool of up to three well-qualified artists or artist teams. Phase 2 evaluation will focus on evaluating detailed proposals from the Phase 1 selected artists.
The public art piece will be installed in the center of the new roundabout at S. Carson Street and S. Stewart Street, a major roadway corridor with approximately 16,000 vehicles passing through daily. The overall diameter of the landscaped area is approximately 70 feet, with a minimally landscaped center area of approximately 24 feet in diameter. The roundabout includes a 2-inch water supply, electrical conduit, and natural gas conduit to support the artwork. The project goals are for the artwork to be site-specific and unique; incorporate Carson City symbols, emblems, culture, and/or history; include clean, simple lines; serve as an iconic gateway piece; and be aesthetically appealing from all directions.
Phase 1 materials must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. MDT on June 30, 2023. Phase 2 materials for selected artists must be submitted via email to Carol Akers at [email protected] by 11:59 p.m. PST on October 30, 2023. The project budget is $190,000 for all costs including artist's fee, materials, fabrication, engineering work, delivery, insurance, permitting, and installation. The artist must be willing and able to secure all requisite licenses and permits. Design plans must be reviewed and stamped by an appropriately licensed Nevada engineer and installed by appropriately licensed Nevada contractor(s). The final design must comply with traffic restrictions including non-obstructive placement, non-reflective materials, and appropriate viewing distance.
