About This Call

reDiscover Center seeks proposals from artists and makers working in the Los Angeles area to create cardboard-based art for inclusion in Cardboard City, a two-month temporary exhibition and creative arts space on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. The exhibition runs June 23-August 29, 2022, with an estimated 15,000-20,000 visitors. Artists can participate in two ways: exhibiting artworks or completing a one-week artist residency (Thursday-Sunday, 12:00-6:00 PM during public hours).

Exhibiting artists are responsible for delivery and pickup of work. Artists may submit pre-existing works or proposals for site-specific pieces. reDiscover can arrange transportation within LA County and provide workspace in their cardboard makerspace in Venice before June 23, as well as cardboard stock including carpet tubes and appliance boxes. Selection criteria include scale, quality, appropriateness to a family-oriented exhibit, creativity, whimsy, environmental sustainability messaging, and relevance to diverse youth experiences in Los Angeles County. Artists-in-residence receive an honorarium of $1,000 per week and use of the facility for a final exhibit/presentation. Multi-week residency proposals will be considered, particularly for monumental sculptures or community-based installations.

Cardboard City is open to all artists, artisans, or makers who reside or regularly exhibit in Los Angeles County. Individual artists and collectives are welcome to apply. All forms of artistic production are considered, but submitted pieces should be substantially made of cardboard and/or residency focus should be cardboard-based art. Artists whose work deals with themes related to reuse, environment, and sustainability are particularly encouraged to apply. Work sample requirements: 1-6 images and/or 0-2 videos (maximum 8 total samples). Notification of selected artists will take place in early May 2022. Installation of exhibited artworks will occur between June 1-22, 2022.
