About This Call
The Carbondale Public Arts Commission is seeking an artist to create a sculptural installation for an outdoor seating and meeting area adjacent to the lobby of the new Carbondale Recreation Center, located in downtown Carbondale. Construction began in March 2007 with completion expected in late winter 2008. The sculpture will be visible from town hall, the Thunder River Theater, the Promenade, and Colorado Mountain College, as well as from inside the rec center lobby. The building features red brick, grey block, and stucco construction with an outdoor seating area marked by a low block wall and covered by an arched rusted-corrugated canopy.
Artists must be Colorado residents. The commission offers $30,000 to create and install the piece in Spring 2008. Up to five finalists will receive a $250 stipend to develop preliminary designs and consult with the committee. Submission requirements include 6 images (5 of completed works and 1 proposal image showing your concept), an artist statement of less than 3000 characters describing the proposal, and a resume describing public art work completed in the last five years, shows or gallery representation in the last five years, honors or awards in the last five years, and art education.
Selection will be based on artistic quality, appropriateness for public display (including safety and maintenance considerations), and successful completion of prior projects of similar scope and complexity. A selection panel will review all applications and select up to five finalists for telephone interviews. Finalist notification is anticipated for August 10, 2007, with final artist selection approximately September 15, 2007. Installation is anticipated for April 2008 with a dedication in May 2008, though delays are possible and installation shall not be later than 90 days after building completion.
