About This Call

The Garfield County Library District and the Town of Carbondale Public Art Commission invite qualified artisans to submit work for consideration in the Carbondale Library Artisan Program. The competition is open to artisans in Rio Blanco, Routt, Eagle, Pitkin, Mesa, or Garfield County to design, fabricate, and install decorative cladding to the main service desk ($5,000 installed) and/or a feature light fixture pendant for that same service desk ($5,000 installed) for the new Carbondale Library. Applicants can apply for both items or just one. Competition entry requires proof of relevant experience through photographed work and submission of scaled concept drawings. The winning artisan(s) will work as a sub-contractor to the existing general contractor (RA Nelson) and will be required to submit detailed hardline shop drawings as part of the project. Architects or other professionals are welcome to apply as long as partnered with an artisan who can serve as the fabricator-installer.

The service desk consists of three tables with four panels (A, B, C, D) to be supplied through this competition. Panels are 1'-8" tall and vary in width (A: 2'-2" W, B: 3'-8¾" W, C: 2'-2" W, D: 2'-2" W). Panels can be created of any durable, safe material that works with the existing library design. The light fixture will be a pendant fixture located centrally above the three desks, serving as a sculptural wayfinding piece. It must be UL listed and weigh under structural limits. The fixture should hang below a dropped wood ceiling (approximately 12' above floor) and above 9'4" above finish floor. LED or other super low energy use is encouraged.

Artisans must have a business in good standing located within Garfield County or a contiguous Colorado county. Submission requires 4-10 JPEG images to scale, including concept proposals. Artist selection will occur in December 2012, with service desk pendant light installation in April 2013 and service desk cladding installation in May 2013. Safety, maintenance, environmental stewardship, and rugged construction for public use are primary considerations. The project is LEED Gold equivalent, and locally sourced, renewable, and recycled materials are valued.
