About This Call
The Garfield County Library District and the Town of Carbondale Public Art Commission invites qualified artists and artisans to submit work for consideration as part of the Carbondale Library Artisan Program. This is a competition for the design, fabrication, and installation of exterior bike racks and an after hours gate. Applicants can apply to one or the other or both. Architects or other designers are welcome to apply with an artisan who can execute the work as the subcontractor required of the competition.
Budgets: Exterior bike racks - $7,050 for storage of 24-36 bikes. Interior after-hours gate - $5,000, approximately 7'x9'. The gate will be on site approximately 2/20/2013, and the bike racks will be on site approximately 4/11/2013. Applicants must be local western-slope artisans with a business in good standing located within Garfield County or a contiguous Colorado county (Rio Blanco, Routt, Eagle, Pitkin, Mesa, or Garfield).
Safety, maintenance, and environmental stewardship are primary concerns in this competition. Design must be rugged for public use with no dangerous or sharp edges, nothing that can be broken by hand, and no easily removable connections. Natural aging should increase positive qualities, and maintenance should be minimal. Locally sourced, renewable, and recycled materials are valued. Submissions should include 4-10 images with concept proposals (plan and section) and past work samples. A seven-member jury will convene to review submissions. If the jury does not find a qualified submission, the Library District's design team will specify and install a product to meet project needs. Deadline: November 1, 2012.
