About This Call
The City of Blue Springs Public Art Commission is seeking artists for "Capricious," the eleventh year of their temporary public art exhibition. Four artists will be selected to provide works of art for exterior display along the southern corridor of Adams Dairy Parkway, near shopping destinations and along a walking trail. The exhibition will run from April 2, 2018 through March 1, 2019. In the past, one or more artworks from each exhibition have been purchased to remain in the City as permanent art.
Artwork should relate to the theme of "Capricious," considering concepts such as fun, whimsical, unusual, unpredictable, surprise, unexpected pleasure, and serendipity. Media can include bronze, stone, wood, metal, ceramics, or other materials suitable for exterior display. Kinetic or interactive art is encouraged. Artworks should be durable and require no maintenance during the 11-month exhibition period, with consideration given to resistance to heavy rains, high heat and humidity, high winds, and seasonal snow or freezing precipitation. Each selected artist will receive an honorarium of $2,500 for the exhibition. Artists are responsible for transporting, installing, and removing their artwork, though PAC may provide some installation costs and on-site equipment. Installation will occur between March 24-31, 2018.
Eligibility is open to all professional artists over the age of eighteen; emerging and professional artists are encouraged to apply. Applicants must submit a letter of interest explaining their interpretation of the theme, a current resume, and 4-6 digital JPEG images representative of their body of work with titles, dimensions, and materials listed. One optional video file may be included. Application deadline is September 18, 2017 by 5:00 PM Mountain Daylight Time. Selected artists will be interviewed by phone and must provide an illustration or photograph of the proposed artwork for PAC approval. Artworks that are offensive, politically motivated, or do not meet community standards of decency will not be approved.
