About This Call
Capitola Village is located along a wide beach with a breathtaking view of Monterey Bay and is home to numerous craft galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and events including the Begonia Festival, Annual Capitola Art & Wine Festival, Twilight Concerts, and art shows. The information kiosk is needed to inform people of upcoming events and activities. The kiosk will be located next to Esplanade Park at the entrance to Capitola Beach.
The project involves designing and fabricating a three-sided free-standing structure with dimensions no greater than 40" wide and 84" tall. The artist will be provided three weather-proof poster cases measuring 30" x 40" made of stainless steel. Materials used should be weather-resistant stainless steel, bronze, copper, or brass. The kiosk will be mounted into concrete pavers, with installation handled by the City of Capitola Public Works. The public art project budget is $15,000, which includes all expenses related to research, design, fabrication, installation, transportation, accommodations, insurance, and other project-related costs.
This opportunity is open to artists working or living along the west coast of the United States in California, Oregon, and Washington. Applicants must be able to demonstrate they have all necessary permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal. The selection process has two phases: Phase One involves review of submittals and selection of up to four finalists by a committee including members of the Art and Cultural Commission, community members, retail district representatives, and visual arts professionals. Phase Two requires selected finalists to prepare detailed concept proposals and present them in-person to the committee. Selection criteria include aesthetic excellence of past projects, appropriateness of prior concepts relating to public art and the kiosk project goals, experience developing artworks in outdoor environments, and experience with construction materials and methods appropriate to the project scope.
Applications must include a summary of relevant experience (1000 character limit), current résumé (maximum 6000 characters per team member), two professional references, six digital images representing no more than five previously completed projects with location, completion year, and cost information, and descriptions of past work including title, date, location, dimensions, materials, and budget. Submit all materials online via CaFÉ by December 6, 2012 at 10:59 p.m. PDT. There is no application fee.
