About This Call
Capitol Reef National Park is offering four artist-in-residence positions for 2023. One residency is dedicated to a night sky artist, with three additional positions available for visual and performing artists, writers, and composers. Each residency lasts 2-4 weeks. Selected artists receive rent-free use of a furnished park house in the Historic Fruita District and a $500 contribution from The Entrada Institute to assist with travel and supply expenses. The program is supported by Capitol Reef National Park in partnership with the Capitol Reef Natural History Association and The Entrada Institute.
Applications are reviewed by jury panels consisting of past program participants, subject matter experts, local community arts leaders, and park staff. Decisions are based on portfolio merit, the artist's ability to communicate the park's significance to visitors, the novelty and interest of proposed public outreach activities, and demonstrated competence and track record in their chosen field.
Selected artists must be at least 18 years old and demonstrate a track record of professional artistic pursuit. Artists are responsible for their own travel expenses and must possess a valid driver's license and personal vehicle for local transportation. Housing includes a private bedroom and studio with shared common areas. Utilities, Wi-Fi, telephone line, and washer/dryer access are provided. No cell phone service is available in the park. Artists are enrolled in the Volunteers-in-Parks program and work an average of 40 hours per week. During the residency, artists must present a minimum of one 45-minute public interpretive program for a two-week residency or two presentations for a four-week residency. Within six months after the residency, artists must donate an original Capitol Reef-inspired work to the Capitol Reef Natural History Association. Visual artists' pieces are limited to 48 inches on any side for two-dimensional works or an 18-inch square footprint for three-dimensional indoor pieces. Artists retain copyright ownership but grant permission for limited use by the park and partners for program promotion and bookstore sales, with proceeds benefitting program operational costs.
Applications must include a professional resume (no more than two pages), a statement of purpose (no more than one page), a brief description of intended public presentation with technical requirements, and work samples. Visual artists should submit up to six JPEG files. Videographers and performing artists may submit up to three productions not exceeding 10 minutes total. Literary artists may submit up to four samples of no more than three pages each. The entry fee is $20.00.
