About This Call
The Community Redevelopment Agency of Jacksonville Beach is seeking proposals for a single-dimensional mural that highlights the pedestrian-friendly beach life and growing entrepreneurial spirit of Jacksonville Beach. The mural will activate a space in downtown to encourage safe and friendly pedestrian usage. The building housing the mural stores downtown police vehicles (CAPE) and is approximately 125 ft. in length, 20 ft. in width, and 10 ft. tall. Artists may incorporate policing initiatives into their concept if desired.
The proposed art should be reflective of the Beach Life brand, natural elements located in the beach community, and should entice users and engage the community in a positive way. Artists working in a variety of materials are encouraged to apply, including stone, metal, wood, concrete, found objects, natural materials, plastics, fiberglass, light, and sound. Applicants must have experience creating, fabricating, and installing public art, with proven ability to work within the public process and either fabricate their own work or collaborate with fabricators and installers.
The total budget is $30,000.00, which includes all costs to the artist including artwork proposals, engineering, permitting, fabrication, shipping, delivery, storage (if applicable), insurance, travel, lighting (if applicable), and installation. When applicable, the artist may be responsible for concrete base and footer for installation. Payments will be made directly to the artist(s) as follows: 25% when contract is signed, 25% upon final design approval, and 50% within 30 days of receipt of the installation. Application requirements include an artist statement (250-word maximum), resume emphasizing public art experience, minimum 3 completed projects with 8 images and up to 2 videos, colorized sketch or computer rendering with dimensions shown from front, back, and side, and a narrative describing artwork symbolism, intention, and technical detail (500-word maximum). Artists must certify availability for site visits during the project period, be over 18 years old with public art experience, obtain required insurance coverage, and provide one year of maintenance post-installation. Jury dates: 12/19/22 - 1/19/23. Commissioned artist notification and contract execution will occur post-CRA approval. Final design concept is tentatively February 2023, with site prep, installation, and grand opening ceremony dates to be determined.
