About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is seeking an artist to design and execute a public art bike rack for the Canyon Country Community Center. The selected artist will receive $3,000 for the project, including design fee, travel, consultation, and fabrication costs. Payment will be made in two installments: $2,000 upon selection and $1,000 upon completion and installation. Installation and site preparation costs will be covered by the City.
Designs must comply with national bicycle parking standards as outlined in the Bicycle Parking Guidelines from the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (www.apbp.org). The rack must securely hold a bicycle frame and one wheel using a U-lock or cable lock, with locking points between one and three feet off the ground. Supports must be a minimum of 30 inches apart. Materials must be durable and weather-resistant, such as powder-coated metal, stainless steel, polished concrete, composite acrylics, or appropriate recycled materials. The design must be smooth to avoid scratching bicycles, vandal-resistant, and free of sharp edges. The design must also comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards, with the protruding edge no higher than 27 inches above the sidewalk, the top of the rack at least 36 inches tall, and the shortest section at least 27 inches tall. Spacing between rack features must be larger than 9 inches or smaller than 3.5 inches.
Artists may submit only one proposal. Work samples must include 3 images and may include up to 1 video. Three finalists will be selected and each will receive a $300 stipend to develop concept proposals. The winning artist will be announced by December 13, 2013, with installation scheduled for April 18, 2014. The City reserves the right to remove completed works if necessary and to modify the project timeline.
