About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is accepting applications from artists or artist teams for a permanent artwork at the new Canyon Country Community Center. The theme is 'Gateway'. Under the Civic Art Policy, the community center qualifies as a City Capital Improvement Project that allocates 1% of eligible project costs for civic art. The estimated budget for this project is $121,500 to $135,000.
The artwork will be located on the street corner of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway, a commuter corner with heavy car and pedestrian traffic, two popular bus stops, and nearby shops, restaurants, and a gas station. The landscaping includes bushes and a few trees. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2019, with building completion likely by 2021. The artwork installation is expected in winter 2020 or early 2021.
Eligibility: Artists 18 years or older residing in the United States may submit individual or collaborative applications. Artists must have successfully completed at least one public art project with a government agency. Application materials include a cover letter, resume, description of past works, artist statement, and portfolio of 15-20 images of past work (at least two from a previous public art project with a government agency). Video (maximum three) and audio (maximum two) are accepted. The Artist Selection Committee will select three to five finalists to present final proposed artwork. Each finalist receives a $1,000 honorarium. One artist will be selected for installation and execution. The proposed artwork should be original, site-specific, complementary to the surrounding area, and made with durable, low-maintenance material. Artists are responsible for all design, fabrication, transportation, and installation costs, as well as obtaining required engineer drawings and insurance coverage for the installation period. The artwork must reach permanency of a minimum of 25 years. Applicants will be judged on artistic merit, capability, past work, and supporting materials. Selected finalists will be notified by November 29, 2018.
