About This Call

Canal Street TransART Shelters seeks artwork from Louisiana artists for fourteen public art commissions. Artists must currently reside in Louisiana or have resided there during the 12 months prior to August 29, 2005. Medium is open as long as artwork can be transferred into a high-resolution image.

Each commission offers $2,500, with a top jury pick award of $5,000. Artwork will be photographed, digitally printed onto laminate appliqués, and applied to plexi-glass walls of transit shelters. Each shelter has 20 Lexan panels: 10 panels measuring 56¼" by 25" and 10 panels measuring 10¾" by 25" (transom-style). Two panels will be reserved for transit communications. Artists may apply a single work of art over 18 panels (mural style) or create a strongly unified design with multiple pieces. The artist must cover all 18 available panes using artwork or colored or patterned appliqués. Works must be suitable for outdoor display and photographed to provide 100-150 dpi per square inch for printed appliqué. Artwork must be appropriate and legal for public property display; political, religious, or sexually explicit content will not be considered. Katrina-themed art will not be accepted. The theme is Contemporary Art in New Orleans with keywords: Positive, Vibrant, Growth, Renew, New Orleans, Uplifting.

Proposals must include an artist statement and written description (limited to 500 words), visual representation showing how artwork will be laid out within the 18 panes, current resume (no more than two pages), and three JPGs of past work completed within the last five years. Artists may submit up to three separate entries, each requiring a separate user ID and new set of images. A jury panel will evaluate submissions based on strength, creativity, and originality of design; appropriateness for public display; ability to work with photographer or provide camera-ready artwork within the given timeline; and strength of the artist's proposal and portfolio. Installation dates are September 15 through October 16, 2008. Artwork is intended to remain on public display through November 2011. The artist will be identified on the transit shelter. The organization has the right to reproduce artwork as needed for shelter maintenance and to use artwork on its website and for promotional materials.
