Canal Alliance Roof Murals

Canal Alliance is announcing a 2-mural project, Phase 1 of a 4-mural program on Canal Alliance's headquarters buildings in downtown San Rafael, California, to be completed by October 2024. The mural locations are on second floor sloping roofs on walls accessible by fixed ladder. Mural walls are: Marina Building South facing, 54'x9' (486sf); Bay Building West facing, 108'x9' (972sf). The murals will only be visible at a considerable distance. A level, moveable working stage will access 10' portions of the wall(s) at a time, requiring movement by a minimum of two persons. Assistance by The Canal Arts will be available if needed. The mural wall surface is on newly-installed, smooth, newly-primed fiber cement panels. Onsite materials storage, cleanup and toilet facilities are available to artists. Artists will have site access during all daylight hours, 7 days a week.

Proposals are due May 26, 2024. The Canal Arts will review proposals with the Mural Project Advisory Group, comprised of artists, Canal Alliance and community representatives, and will announce results by June 20, 2024. Three finalist artists will be selected to fully develop art, with submission by finalists due July 12, 2024. The process will involve online discussions with the Advisory Group. Selected artists will be paid $12,000 for completed art if selected for both walls ($8,000 and/or $4,000), and if installing is included, $22,000 for both walls ($8,000 and/or $13,000). Total budget is $36,000. The Canal Arts may accept mural art by an artist to be installed by others if the artist chooses. A video documentary of the project will be created by The Canal Arts as an educational example of a community-engaged public arts project and made available to artists. The mural walls will be night-illuminated.

Eligibility: Mural artist(s) from S.F. Bay Area Counties (San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Solano, Napa, Sonoma). Application requirements include artist name, website, email, phone, mail address; resumé/bio (one page; if a team, identify lead artist and include all artist bios); and work examples (6 minimum, 10 maximum). Submit 6-8 images.
