About This Call

The City of Olympia is seeking up to 16 loaned sculptures from Washington and Oregon state artists for temporary display of up to one year on Percival Landing and for consideration for the Peoples' Prize purchase of one sculpture for the City's public art collection.

Eligibility: Washington and Oregon state sculptors, 18 years of age or older. Artists may not submit works previously exhibited on the Percival Plinths. Each sculpture submitted must be available for exhibition June 2019-June 2020. Artists may submit up to two entries, with three to five slides each. Sculptures must be made of durable materials and finishes intended for exterior exhibition, including bronze, aluminum, steel, stone, and concrete. Maximum weight allowed is 2500 lbs, with the center of weight no more than 9" offset from center of plinth, and no more than 42" above sculpture base on top of plinth. Sculptures must be maintenance-free, graffiti resistant, and must not present a safety risk to the public. Artwork that includes advertising or logos or is political, religious, or sexual in nature will not be considered. Artists should bear in mind that audiences will be broad-based and of all ages, and artwork should be appropriate for display in a public place.

Selection Criteria: Quality of sculpture including evidence of artistic ability, originality or uniqueness of vision, technical competency, material integrity, and craftsmanship. Balance and diversity of materials and style among selected sculptures. Sculptures will be displayed on outdoor pedestals along Percival Landing for up to one year. Artists will be paid a $700 honorarium for each loaned sculpture. Based on popular vote, one sculpture will be purchased by the City for permanent display, with purchase price not to exceed $10,000 inclusive of fees and taxes. Work on display can be available for sale with no commission taken from artwork sold. Installation takes place June 21, 2019. The City of Olympia will assume limited liability not to exceed $1,500 for gross damage or theft during exhibition. Artists are responsible for shipping works to and from the exhibit location and for securely attaching their sculpture with a minimum of 3 points of contact to a stainless steel plate provided by the City. Entry deadline: February 10, 2019.
