About This Call
The City of Olympia is seeking up to 16 loaned sculptures from Washington and Oregon state artists for temporary display of up to one year on Percival Landing and for consideration for the Peoples' Prize purchase of one sculpture for the City's public art collection.
Eligibility: Washington and Oregon state sculptors, 18 years of age or older. Artists may not submit works previously exhibited on the Percival Plinths. Artists may submit up to two entries, with three to five slides each. Selected sculptures must be available for exhibition June 2018-June 2019. All sculptures must be made of durable materials and finishes intended for exterior exhibition, including bronze, aluminum, steel, stone, and concrete. Work must be maintenance-free and graffiti resistant. Maximum weight is 2,500 lbs, with center of weight no more than 9" offset from center of plinth, and no more than 3'-6" above sculpture base on top of plinth. Sculptures must not present a safety risk to the public, should withstand exposure to the elements and unsupervised interaction, and artists must expect that sculpture may be climbed or marked on during exhibition. Artwork that includes advertising or logos or is political, religious, or sexual in nature will not be considered.
Selection will be based on quality of sculpture including evidence of artistic ability, originality or uniqueness of vision, technical competency, material integrity and craftsmanship, balance and diversity of materials and style among selected sculptures, and appropriateness for display in a public place with broad-based audiences of all ages. Artists will be paid a $700 honorarium for each loaned sculpture and must purchase a City of Olympia Business license. Based on popular vote, one sculpture will be purchased by the City for permanent display, with purchase price not to exceed $10,000 inclusive of fees and taxes. Work on display can be available for sale with no commission taken from artwork sold. The City will assume limited liability not to exceed $1,500 for gross damage or theft during exhibition. Artists are responsible for shipping works to and from the exhibit location. Installation takes place June 22, 2018. Entry deadline: January 31, 2018.
