About This Call
The City of Olympia is seeking up to 15 loaned sculptures from Washington and Oregon state artists for temporary display of up to one year on Percival Landing and for consideration for the Peoples' Prize purchase of one sculpture for the City's public art collection.
Eligibility: Washington and Oregon state sculptors, 18 years of age or older. Artists may not submit works previously exhibited on the Percival Plinths. Artists may submit up to two entries, with two slides each. All sculptures must be made of durable materials and finishes intended for exterior exhibition, including bronze, aluminum, steel, stone, and concrete. Maximum weight allowed is 2500lbs, with the center of weight no more than 9" offset from center of plinth, and no more than 3'-6" above sculpture base on top of plinth. Work must be maintenance-free and graffiti resistant. Artwork that includes advertising or logos or is political, religious, or sexual in nature will not be considered. Artists should bear in mind that audiences will be broad-based and of all ages and artwork should be appropriate for display in a public place. Sculptures must be able to withstand exposure to the elements and unsupervised interaction, and artists must expect that sculpture may be climbed or marked on during exhibition.
Compensation and Details: Artists will be paid a $700 honorarium for each loaned sculpture. Based on popular vote, one sculpture will be purchased by the City for permanent display in another public place at a purchase price not to exceed $10,000 inclusive of fees and taxes. Work on display can be available for sale with no commission taken from artwork sold. Selected artists will agree to loan sculpture(s) to the City for up to one year, with installation taking place the week of June 19, 2017. Sculptures will be displayed on outdoor pedestals along Percival Landing. Artists will be recognized by a plaque near their work, and artist information will be available on the City's website. The City of Olympia will assume limited liability, not to exceed $1,500, for gross damage or theft during the exhibition. Artists are responsible for shipping/transporting works to and from the exhibit location. Artists selected for exhibition must purchase a City of Olympia Business license.
