About This Call
The City of Olympia is seeking up to 15 loaned sculptures from Washington State artists for temporary display of up to one year on Percival Landing and for consideration for the Peoples' Prize purchase of one sculpture for the City's public art collection.
Eligibility: Washington State sculptors, 18 years of age or older. Artists may not submit works previously exhibited on the Percival Plinths. Artists may submit up to two entries, with two slides each. All sculptures must be made of durable materials and finishes intended for exterior exhibition, including bronze, aluminum, steel, stone, and concrete. Work must be maintenance-free and graffiti resistant. Maximum weight is 2,500 lbs, with center of weight no more than 9" offset from center of plinth, and no more than 3'-6" above sculpture base. Sculptures must not present a safety risk, should withstand exposure to the elements and unsupervised interaction, and artists must expect that sculpture may be climbed or marked on during exhibition. Artwork that includes advertising, logos, or is political, religious, or sexual in nature will not be considered. Artwork should be appropriate for display in a public place with broad-based audiences of all ages.
Selected artists will receive a $700 honorarium for each loaned sculpture and must agree to loan sculpture(s) to the City for up to one year (June 2016-June 2017). Sculptures will be displayed on outdoor pedestals along Percival Landing, with location at the sole discretion of the City. Artists are responsible for shipping/transporting works to and from the exhibit location and for securely attaching their sculpture to a 2' x 2' x 1/4" stainless steel plate provided by the City. Installation takes place the week of June 20, 2016. Work on display can be available for sale with no commission taken from artwork sold. Based on popular vote, one sculpture will be purchased by the City for permanent display, with purchase price not to exceed $10,000 inclusive of fees and taxes. The City assumes limited liability not to exceed $1,500 for gross damage or theft during exhibition. Artists selected for exhibition must purchase a City of Olympia Business license.
