About This Call

The City of Ann Arbor Fire Department invites artists, designers, or artist teams to submit qualifications to create a site-specific public artwork at the new Fire Station #4, located at 2415 S. Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, MI. The new station is currently under construction and expected to be completed by Fall 2026. The selected artist will create a visually impactful work that is fire station or service related in theme. Artists may propose work for one or both of two potential artwork locations: Site A, a lawn and wall area in front of the building between the front wall and Huron Parkway (wall is 62' long x 14' tall); or Site B, the upper window bays on one, two, or all three sides of the fire engine glass garage. Only one artist or artist team will be selected for the commission.

Site A is suitable for three-dimensional, durable outdoor work in any medium that can withstand weather, time, and vandalism. The composite wall can only accommodate lightweight attachments; heavier work should be situated in front with an appropriate foundation. Site B anticipates stained glass as the medium, though other light-based or visually compelling materials such as neon are welcome. If stained glass, the work should preferably be placed on the interior side of the windows. Designs may include limited letters, numbers, or words but should not be the sole focus. Designs may not include logos, trademarked materials, commercial imagery, religious or political content, or imagery considered sacred by any peoples. All artwork must be original and fabricated from durable, low-maintenance materials appropriate for public display.

The budget for this commission is $75,000, inclusive of all costs including design fee, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, permits, insurance, and contingency. Work sample requirements: 5-10 images and 0-3 videos (5-10 total samples). The selection process is two-stage: a panel will review applications based on letter of interest, quality and creativity of past work, demonstrated experience with permanent public artwork, resume, references, and alignment with project goals. Up to five semi-finalists will be invited to develop site-specific proposals and will receive a $750 stipend. The finalist will be selected following interviews and will contract with the City of Ann Arbor. Entry deadline: August 10, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Semi-finalists will be selected in October 2025, with proposals due after 6 weeks and finalist awarded in December 2025.
