About This Call
Athena Project and Women's Bean Project seek three women* muralists to design and create three murals for the exterior garages of the Women's Bean Project campus located at 1300 West Alameda Avenue in Denver. Women's Bean Project recently moved to a 20,000 square foot facility in the Athmar Park neighborhood with a mission to change women's lives by providing stepping stones to self-sufficiency through social enterprise. Athena Project is collaborating to produce this work of art to elevate the mission of Women's Bean Project and empower women in the arts.
Mural designs should reflect the mission of Women's Bean Project and highlight themes of community/love & support, empowerment/strength/confidence, and transformation. Each garage door measures 12' wide by 9'8" high. Artists must work within a specified color palette (Iron Ore SW7069, Earthen Jug SW7703, Auric SW6692, Artichoke SW6179). Designs must not include faces, insects, or political or provocative themes. The artist is responsible for all material costs (paints, ladders, brushes, etc.) within the stipend award. Women's Bean Project will maintain the murals, which are expected to have a lifespan of approximately 5-10 years.
Submissions must include: a project proposal of no more than 750 words with sketches or design ideas; a portfolio of at least 5 images of previously completed projects; a resume or cover letter listing all murals previously completed with locations and relevant experience; links to social media and website; and two references. The selection process includes twelve semi-finalists notified by October 27, 2022, who will participate in 10-minute interviews on October 28-30. Six finalists will be selected and each paid $250 to prepare and present full design concepts via Zoom by November 16, 2022. Three winning artists will be selected by November 23, 2022, each receiving $4,000 (25% upon selection, 75% upon completion). Mural installation is scheduled to begin December 1 and be finalized by December 7, 2022. Open to all women* artists, including non-binary and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
