About This Call
Sol Housing invites local artists to create a vibrant Route 66-themed mural at Farolito Senior Community, an affordable housing development on Central Avenue in Albuquerque. Farolito is an apartment community with 82 units for seniors 55 and older, currently under construction. The mural panel is approximately 21 feet wide by 5 feet tall, located at ground level on a new stucco wall on the southside of the 4-story building facing Central Avenue.
The mural should honor Route 66's legacy of cultural crossroads while celebrating the present neighborhood, reflect authentic voices through genuine community engagement, and spark conversation and connection. Sol Housing will provide a one-time grant of $7,500 to the awarded artist to cover materials, supplies, equipment, labor, transportation, and compensation for design and installation. Payment will be provided in three installments: $2,500 after signing the contract, $2,500 after completion of the approved design sketch, and $2,500 after completion of the mural. The artist is responsible for transportation to the site and storing/transporting their own materials.
Eligibility requirements: New Mexico resident, at least two previous mural installations, and 16 years of age or older. Application materials must include previous examples of work (1-12 images), a resume with New Mexico residence and email address, a minimum of two references from previous installations, a description of your thoughts or process for the mural theme, and an estimated budget for materials and expenses. Preference points will be given to low-income New Mexico resident artists who self-certify annual income of less than $51,200 in 2024, or who live in Public or Indian Housing, or utilize a housing voucher.
