Call for Mural Artist: Celebrating Wilson County, North Carolina

Wilson Arts and the Wilson County Tourism Development Authority invite muralists located in North Carolina to create a location-specific mural celebrating Wilson as a destination. The theme of the mural will be celebrating Wilson County and what makes the destination unique and special. Murals are powerful tools to strengthen community pride, reinforce a sense of place, and distinguish communities from neighboring areas.

The mural will be located on the side of the brand-new Wilson Visitor's Center featuring Wilson's first roof garden with stunning views of the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park in the heart of Historic Downtown Wilson. It will also be within walking distance of the new multi-million dollar baseball stadium. The wall is approximately 15 ft. tall and 85 ft. wide. The material is brick—smoother towards the bottom and rougher texture toward the roof. There is a glass door, conduit, and exterior lighting to consider when designing. The entire surface area does not have to be covered, but a design that works with the architecture of the building is preferred. Parking signs will be relocated, and much of the hardware will remain but can be painted if desired.

Artists are responsible for the entire mural execution, including hiring and paying assistants if chosen. The budget is $6,000. Applicants must submit a small portfolio (2-5 images) of past mural works or non-mural works most similar to the project, a narrative on approach to the mural including any other commission work, an artist statement including biography and website/social media, and a preliminary budget. Eligibility is open to visual artists 18 years or older located in North Carolina.
