About This Call
This call seeks artwork for exhibitions in the Simperman and Hāmākua Galleries at Kahilu Theatre in November 2023. Proposals from solo artists, artist groups and collectives, and curators with strong connections to Hawaiʻi will be considered.
Kahilu Exhibits offers exhibition spaces on Hawaiʻi Island that welcome upwards of 1000 visitors each week for performances, classes, and events. The Simperman and Hāmākua Galleries are open during special gallery hours, as well as before and after all events at Kahilu Theatre. Kahilu Theatre added live streaming and on-demand access to exhibitions through the Kahilu.tv app. Staff offers museum-quality support to artists and curators in exhibition preparation, layout design, and display creation. Exhibits featuring all media are encouraged, including painting, drawing, photography, fibers, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, video, sound art, installation, new media, fashion, jewelry, and traditional crafts.
Tentative exhibition dates are November 9, 2023 – January 7, 2024. Entry fee is $35.00. Applicants may submit 2 applications with 10-20 total work samples (10-15 images, 0-5 audio files, 0-5 video files). No stipend or honorarium is offered at this time. Proposals including paid programming such as workshops and classes are welcomed. Applicants should note that shipping artwork to Hawaiʻi can be expensive, and Kahilu Exhibits does not assist in covering shipping costs. All applications and artwork will remain on file for future consideration, including exhibitions beyond 2023.
