About This Call

Denali National Park & Preserve seeks accomplished artists, writers, and composers for its Artist-in-Residence program. The park invites about a half-dozen artists annually to spend ten days in Denali during summer (June-September). Participants must provide their own transportation and supplies at their own expense. Alaska Native artists and American Indian artists are strongly encouraged to apply. International artists are eligible.

Residencies are based at remote ranger patrol cabins with basic amenities including propane heat, cooking equipment, and bunks, but no electricity or running water. Residents receive a road pass for private vehicle access and passes for the Visitor Transportation System shuttle buses. Each resident must lead a public outreach activity with visitors on the final Friday (45-90 minutes, typically 12-24 participants). Residents are allowed up to $150 for activity materials and supplies. Residents may choose to donate finished works to the program collection. The program seeks artists working on topics of national timeliness such as immigration, climate change, inclusion, security, or conservation, though other themes are considered.

Work sample requirements: up to 6 images, 3 audio files, and 3 video files (maximum 6 total samples). Applications are accepted online through CaFÉ from June 1 through September 30 for residencies the following summer, limited to the first 250 applications. Selection is based on entry materials, vision, innovative responses to the park, and demonstrated accomplishment. Formal invitations are extended by December 31, with public announcement early in the new calendar year. For artwork donations, two-dimensional pieces should not exceed 48 inches in any dimension and be suitably framed; three-dimensional pieces should not exceed 24 inches and should not require permanent installation or structural modification of park facilities.
