Call for Curatorial Exhibit Proposals

Art Works Downtown invites curators to submit proposals for exhibition in Gallery 1337. The gallery features traditional, modern, and contemporary work by established and emerging artists from the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Approved proposals receive a two-month exhibit (September 27–November 8, 2024 and 2025) and a curator stipend up to $5,000.

Proposals will be evaluated based on the strength of concept, quality of proposed artworks, and feasibility of the exhibit plan. Group exhibits of three or more artists are preferred, though curators working with a solo artist are also welcome. All visual-art mediums are welcome. Exhibits must showcase approximately 16–36 artworks depending on scale. Exhibiting artists must be living artists who reside within 100 miles of San Rafael, California during the exhibit dates. At least 50% of exhibiting artworks must be for sale, with Art Works Downtown requesting a 40% donation upon sale. Artwork with explicit sexual content or graphic violence is prohibited.

Submissions must include an exhibition statement (maximum 2000 words), an itemized budget, 10–20 images of proposed artworks with an image list including title, media, and dimensions, resumes and bios for each artist, curator information (resume, bio, and examples of past exhibits), and a draft plan showing how artwork would display in the exhibition space. The application is free. Curators must agree to be available for meetings with staff, two receptions, an Art Talk, and any press interviews. Installation must be completable in under four days.
