Call for Chalk Artists - Salida Chalk Art Festival

The 1st Salida Chalk Festival will transform downtown Salida into a giant outdoor gallery as artists create 5' x 5' temporary chalk and pastel works live during the festival. Following the Madonnari tradition of chalk painting from Italy, artists will create their works directly on the street. The festival is produced by Salida Arts and Culture and the Salida Creative District in partnership with the Salida Public Arts Commission.

The Salida Creative District invites artists within a 150-mile radius to apply. Selected artists must be at least 18 years old and will work Saturday, June 29, 9am-5pm. The festival theme is "Sweet Home Salida." Applicants should submit a sketch of their proposed artwork with a brief description and 2-3 images demonstrating relevant experience in large-scale work such as chalk art or murals. Artists are selected based on: complete application, local artist status within 150-mile radius, creative use of theme, sketch adherence to guidelines, and demonstrated ability to complete a 5' x 5' piece in one day.

Selected artists receive a set of 24 color pastels, an event t-shirt, breakfast and lunch, and a $250 stipend. Artwork must be produced as submitted or with written approval to change the design. Only non-oil-based soft chalk and pastels in solid form are permitted; no acrylic paints, spray can pastels, oil-based pastels, or hard pastels are allowed. Artwork cannot contain words, symbols, logos, or advertising, except official sponsor logos. The festival will be held rain or shine. An awards ceremony and celebration takes place at 5:30pm on June 29. Jury results will be announced by May 15, 2024.
