About This Call

In Fall 2023, South San Francisco's Library | Parks and Recreation Center will open, featuring enhanced spaces on three floors to support enrichment, learning, performance, and fitness. The City will feature a series of three two-dimensional hanging art exhibits featuring a body of work created by solo artists. Two-dimensional art will be displayed on the first-floor corridor and in the Council Chambers/Community Theater atrium. The first solo exhibit will be presented in conjunction with the grand opening in mid-October 2023, followed by two solo exhibits running February through May and June through September 2024. All dates are tentative. The artist will receive a $1,000 honorarium distributed in two payments.

Artists 18 years or older living or working in the San Francisco Bay Area are invited to submit proposals. Priority will be given to San Mateo County artists. Works should be original and created by the exhibiting artist. Two-dimensional fine arts media may include painting, collage, drawing, fiber arts, photography, digital painting, and mixed media. There are no entry fees. Submissions must include up to 20 different images (JPEG/JPG format, under 5 MB, minimum 1200 pixels on longest side), a brief exhibit proposal with suggested installation layout (2,000 characters), an itemized image inventory list, and artist biography or resumé (PDF or Word, 2 pages max). Indicate your preference of exhibit period.

Artwork must be two-dimensional and prepared for hanging with reinforced wire or D-rings. Art must be framed or finished and in new or like-new condition. Gallery-wrapped paintings are acceptable if all sides are painted or finished with no visible staples. Each piece cannot exceed 50 pounds. Art must use the building's on-site cable and hook system. Saw-tooth hangers are not acceptable. Delivered artwork must match the submitted image. Art will be hand-delivered to SSF Library | Parks and Recreation Center, 901 Civic Campus Way, South San Francisco, CA. Installation will occur approximately one week prior to opening, and the artist must be present for installation and removal. Art must remain on display until the close of the exhibit and cannot be removed or altered after installation. There will be no art sales; artists may be contacted directly for purchase inquiries.
