About This Call
The LSU Chemistry and Materials Building, completed in 2012, increased lab space for the Chemistry Department by 63 percent. The building houses 140 faculty workstations, electron microscope stations, micro and nanofabrication equipment, organic and polymer chemistry labs, equipment labs, conference rooms, administrative offices, student lab, and office space and break rooms. This call seeks artists to create exterior artwork for the building.
Project goals include inspiring and engaging students, faculty, staff, and visitors through artwork that captivates imagination and appreciation for the sciences; reflecting the disciplines by symbolizing concepts and innovations in chemistry and materials science; integrating with the environment by complementing the architectural aesthetics of the building and surrounding campus landscape; and ensuring durability through materials that are safe for public interaction, can withstand the elements, and require minimal maintenance.
Applicants must be professional artists 18 and over with a minimum of five years of professional visual art experience. Artist teams may apply and must designate one lead contact. A complete application must include: artist résumé(s), a statement of interest describing why you are interested in the project, previous public art experience, your methods of working, and how the art will enhance the chosen space(s), three references with names and current contact information, and up to 10 images of original completed commissions or artworks (not proposals, sketches, or 3-D models) completed within the last 10 years. Each image must include title, medium, dimensions, project budget in US dollars, year completed, location, and description, with only one view per image. Up to 3 videos of work examples are optional. The project budget is $95,000. Entry deadline: 12/13/24 at 11:59 p.m. MST.
