About This Call

The C3Lab Public Arts Fellowship Program was created to support artists in the Charlotte community and promote cultural vitality in the Southeast. After the closure of the C3Lab creative coworking hub, the parent design+build firm ACSM Inc. created this focused opportunity to assist emerging and mid-level career artists looking to broaden their careers in the public arts realm with an entire year of focused knowledge and support.

This inaugural fellowship program is the first of its kind in the country. Participating fellows will experience the design+build process for creating, designing, fabricating, and installing public art, covering aspects from materials selection to professional documentation of their final public sculpture. Chosen fellows will have full access to a large, shared professional studio space to continue building upon their own artistic practice. There are no expectations regarding what artists will design or create within the space, and it is solely dedicated to professional development without biases of artist prestige or status.

Two fellows will be selected by a juried committee comprised of professionals with knowledge and experience in the public arts realm and the local business sponsor. Fellows are responsible for their own art supplies, transportation, and housing during the year-long program. Tools, machines, and equipment will be available within ACSM workday schedule. Participants must be available for all regularly scheduled educational days and utilize studio space 80% of their time during the entire fellowship program dates. Artists must be 21 years of age or older, commit to the full year-long commitment, participate in quarterly Open Studios and community events, and be able to work closely with various sized groups. Application requires resume/CV, artist biography, artist statement, and 3-7 artwork images. An optional short video about work and/or process may be submitted. Entry fee: $50.
