About This Call
BY THE NUMBERS is an exhibition connecting the world of sculpture to the world of numbers, exploring relationships among mathematical representations and real world entities, articles, gadgets, devices, objects and materials. The exhibition will seek to illustrate or reveal these relationships through spectacle and magic that relies on arrays, sequences, intervals, quantity, counting and numbering schemes, geometry, lines, linearity, circles, sectors, angles, measurement, mechanics, engineering, and similar notions. The show will also attempt to include connections, relationships and intersections among these concepts and the natural and environmental forms and influences evident in numerology and metaphysics.
The exhibition is open to members of the Washington Sculptors Group whose 2011 membership status is current. Artists who are not already members may join WSG by paying annual dues of $45 ($15 for full-time students). Three-dimensional freestanding and wall-hung indoor sculpture, installation, video and new media will be considered. Outdoor work, performance and ceiling suspended work will not be accepted. All work must be able to pass through double doors 6 feet wide by 8 feet high. Artists may submit up to four images (two views of two works or single images of up to four works). Works must not have been previously exhibited by WSG or at BlackRock Center for the Arts. A sentence or two relating work to the exhibition theme must be supplied in the Image Description field. The entry fee is $45. The application deadline is July 5, 2011 at 12:00 midnight, with submissions processed through CaFE (www.callforentries.org).
The exhibition runs September 7-30, 2011 at BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown, MD 20874. Installation is Friday, September 2, 10 am-2 pm. The artists' reception with remarks by curator Claudia Rousseau is Saturday, September 10, 5:30-7:30 pm. Work pickup is Saturday, October 3, 10 am-2 pm. All accepted work must remain on display for the full duration of the show. All works must be available for sale through BlackRock Center for the Arts, which retains a 30% commission. Work will be insured by WSG while at BlackRock. For questions, contact [email protected] or call James Mallos at 301-933-1151 or Pattie Firestone at 301-654-5528.
