Bucknell University Outdoor Sculpture RFP

Bucknell University is seeking an artistically excellent outdoor sculpture of a bison for its campus. The sculpture must be life-size or larger than life-size (scale of 1-1.5), figurative and naturalistic in style so as to be recognizable as a bison, though some artistic interpretation is expected. The work must be fabricated in bronze or similar material, footed on a low base, and designed for long-term structural integrity. The sculpture will be outside in open space and must be able to weather Pennsylvania winters and summers including sub-freezing temperatures, heavy rain, humidity, high wind, and ice. It should be designed without long, thin forms that might be prone to breaking or that might pose a hazard to people.

Selection will be scored based on artistic excellence, quality and originality of the artist and team members as evidenced by past work; professional qualifications and experience of the artist; appropriateness of approach to the Bucknell campus site; experience with or ability to procure or oversee services of other professionals (e.g., foundry) if needed; technical expertise in design, fabrication, and installation of permanent public outdoor sculpture; experience working collaboratively with universities or other institutions; and cost-effective solutions that meet all other project criteria.

Applicants must submit a resume and summary of past experience along with images of both previous work and proposed ideas for the bison sculpture. Submissions should include up to 10 images representing no more than 5 previously completed projects, and no fewer than 3 images showcasing ideas and approach to this project. Descriptions of past work and proposed ideas must accompany submitted images. Budget: $125,000, all inclusive. Deadline to submit: Friday, September 23, at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Applicants must submit 1-20 total image samples.
