About This Call
Business for the Arts of Broward (BFA) in partnership with Broward Health is offering a paid public art mentorship opportunity for five South Florida-based emerging mural artists. Selected artists will work with professional artist Lori Pratico to create a mural for Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale, located on a highly visible wall at the intersection of Andrews Avenue and 17th Street.
Each of the five selected emerging artists will receive: up to $5,000 stipend per artist for a maximum of 100 painting hours ($50 per hour); $30 per day lunch stipend; general liability insurance coverage ($200-$300 value); hands-on experience in designing, scaling, and painting large-scale murals; mentorship and guidance from an established arts professional; their names included on the mural with appropriate ownership of the project; inclusion in a documentary-style presentation of the mural creation; team Zoom meetings to review proposal creation, insurance, best practices, pricing, budgeting, and material selection; and continued career support after project completion. Artists must work on-site during September 2024 for at least 70 hours (approximately 10 days) and maximum 100 hours (approximately 15 days), based on 7-7.5 hours per day, 5-7 days per week consecutively, weather permitting. If rain or hurricane delays occur, the project could extend into October 2024.
Eligibility: Artists must be 18 years or older, based in the South Florida area with transportation to the mural site, and have completed 1-5 murals or large artworks. Applicants must submit 8-10 images of current work (artwork does not need to be a mural) and a written letter of interest through the CaFE website. The letter should include information about yourself, your art practice to date (themes and materials), and why you are interested in this opportunity or pursuing a mural art career. An information session will be held via Zoom on June 28, 2024. Artist notifications will occur on August 8, 2024. Selected artists will meet via Zoom on August 12 and August 26, 2024 before beginning on-site mural installation in fall 2024.
