About This Call

The Broward County Cultural Division's Public Art and Design Program seeks to commission an artist to design and build an iconic exterior landmark artwork adjacent to the Supervisor of Elections Office (SOE). The artwork will be located in a pedestrian-friendly green zone visible from Broward Boulevard at Riverbend, a mixed-use development on the south side of Broward Boulevard just west of I-95. The site is within the landscaped area between the SOE building and a water feature designed by Wet Design. Artwork themes that promote public awareness of voting are encouraged but not required. The selected artist will collaborate with the design team on integration of the artwork to the site and other aspects of streetscape design.

The total project budget is not to exceed $165,000, which includes research, community and agency meetings, design development, insurance, travel, engineering, permits, fabrication, delivery, installation, professional quality photo documentation, and applicable taxes. The anticipated project schedule includes shortlisting submissions due March 16, 2009, finalist interviews and conceptual design proposal selection in June 2009, and artwork completion and installation in summer 2010. Finalists will receive site plan information and have one month to prepare a conceptual design proposal. Finalists will be compensated for presentation expenses and will receive $1,500 for the conceptual design proposal, which becomes the property of the Broward Cultural Division.

This call is open to all professional artists residing in the United States working in all durable media suitable for exterior applications. Application requirements include a letter of interest, professional résumé with public art commissions and past project budgets, and 10 digital images of recent work with an annotated image list. An Artist Selection Panel will review submissions and invite a short list of artists to develop conceptual design proposals. Finalists must submit two digital copies of their full presentation ten days prior to finalist interviews.
