About This Call
The Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department seeks artists to design, build, and install artwork that celebrates the uniqueness of coastal areas, coastal ecological subjects, and changes that occur in coastal regions. The Beach Renourishment Program provides for the replacement of sand on eroded beaches to restore shoreline position and sand volume to normal levels, protecting upland property from storm damage and maintaining sea turtle nesting habitat.
Artists should design durable, low-maintenance exterior artwork suitable for coastal environments. Consideration will be given to designs suitable for replication and installation at multiple sites throughout coastal Broward County's 23 miles of beaches, though this is not required. All artwork must comply with applicable South Florida building codes and environmental restrictions. The total project budget does not exceed $120,000, which includes research, community and agency meetings, design development, insurance, travel, engineering, permits, fabrication, delivery, installation, professional photo documentation, and applicable taxes.
Eligibility is open to all professional artists residing in the United States working in durable, low-maintenance media suitable for exterior applications. Applications must be submitted via CaFÉ at www.CallForEntry.org and include a letter of interest, professional résumé with public art commissions and project budgets, 10 digital images of recent work, and an annotated image list. Shortlisted artists will be invited to develop conceptual design proposals and will receive $1,500 compensation plus presentation expenses. Finalist interviews and conceptual design proposal selection are scheduled for July 2009, with artwork completion and installation anticipated for Summer 2010. Contact Claire Garrett, Public Art and Design Project Manager, at (954) 357-7236 or [email protected].
