About This Call

The Broward County Commission's Cultural Division Public Art and Design Program is seeking to commission a professional artist or team of artists to conduct an in-depth study of future opportunities for public art and design in the context of the Downtown Judicial Complex Expansion Project in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The scope of work requires collaboration with a design team for the development of expansion plans for the Broward County Downtown Judicial Complex, currently located between the New River and SE 6th Street and between Andrews Avenue and SE 3rd Avenue. The expansion would add a new Civil and Family Courthouse and new parking garage, and may include mixed use commercial development. There may be opportunities to provide pedestrian friendly and bicycle access to the Judicial Complex site from the Riverwalk linear park, as well as exterior plazas and other landscape and hardscape elements for wayfinding, placemaking and gathering. The selected Public Art Master Plan artist shall collaborate with the architectural design team to identify ways in which public art can enhance and humanize the overall Judicial Complex campus, and develop a list of appropriate locations, typologies and integrated and site-specific public art projects.

Artist services may include research, interaction with agency, architectural design team and community, a written document including analysis, recommendations, themes, artist opportunities for specific and general locations, preliminary budgets, and schematic timelines, and educational outreach. The total budget for the Downtown Judicial Complex Public Art Master Plan Project is not to exceed $80,000, which includes research, community and agency meetings, conceptual designs, artist recommendations, printing, presentation expenses, insurance, travel and applicable taxes. The call is open to all professional artists residing in the United States working in any media with prior experience developing public art master plans for courthouses or similar public agencies.

Applications must include a letter of interest, professional résumé highlighting public art master planning experience and public art commissions with budget information, and 10 digital images of work relevant to the project scope. An annotated image list with artist name, title of work, media, size, location, project budget, and image information is required. Hard copy materials will not be accepted. Contact Claire Garrett, Public Art and Design Project Manager, at (954) 357-7236 or [email protected] with questions.
