About This Call
The Brookings Public Arts Commission, in partnership with the City of Brookings, SD, seeks an artist to design, fabricate and install 2D artwork in an interior public area of the shared use City/County building. The available installation space is 10' wide x 6' high, though the artist does not need to cover the entire area. The artist may propose a single piece, diptych, triptych, or other configuration. The piece(s) will be in a high foot traffic area, so artwork and frame should not extend too far into the walkway. Proposals may be conceptual but should indicate how the concept will honor the history, cultures and current experiences of Brookings County, SD residents, what medium will be used, and include images of previously completed work.
This call is open to all artists living or working in South Dakota or a neighboring state (Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota). Students are not eligible to apply. The selected artist will receive a commission of $10,000 (including all South Dakota State Sales/Use Tax) to design, fabricate, and install the artwork. This budget also includes any associated travel costs. Detailed specifications and images of the space will be provided once an artist is selected.
Applications must include 7 to 10 images of completed projects demonstrating skill in two-dimensional public artworks, a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters) addressing how the artwork would honor Brookings County residents, a résumé or one-page biography, three references with contact information and relationship to artist, an image identification list (not to exceed 500 characters per image) including title, year, media, dimensions, and description, and a statement of any required maintenance schedule and instructions. Applications deadline: January 15, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Submit written materials and references by mail to City of Brookings Park & Rec. Department, Attn: Public Arts Commission, 520 3rd St., Brookings, SD 57006, or email to [email protected] with "Brookings City/County Art" in the subject line. Do not mail or attach images. Projected timeline: Artist selection and notification in February 2020, artist begins work in March 2020, project completion in August 2020.
