Brookings County Utility Box Art Wrap Project

The Brookings Public Arts Commission is seeking designs for vinyl wraps to be applied to utility boxes within the City of Brookings. This opportunity is open to amateur and professional artists of all levels and all ages, working in any medium, as long as the final artwork can be translated and digitally reproduced on a 2-dimensional vinyl wrap. Artists should note that red fades faster than cool colors and are encouraged to consider this in their designs.

Up to 8 artists will be chosen for this round. Selected artists will be awarded $1,000 per box design, which includes licensing rights enabling the Commission to reproduce the final design on utility boxes within the City. Artists can submit up to 4 designs. The general theme is to celebrate Brookings, with artists encouraged to consider the city's history, contributions of inhabitants, creativity, what Brookings is known for, and ideas or products or inventions from Brookings. Designs must integrate the front, back, and sides of the box to capture the interest of those who drive, ride, and walk by. Vinyl wraps are intended to be installed before Winter 2023.

Final artwork must be submitted as a high-quality digital file by 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2023. Original artwork must be a high-resolution digital file (300 dpi minimum), either as a vector file or high-resolution image. Original photography and digital artwork are acceptable; non-digital mediums must be scanned or photographed to create a high-resolution digital image. Utility boxes will be located on 8th Street South and Main Street in Brookings. The City of Brookings will be responsible for printing and installation. Applicants must be from South Dakota or bordering states, or attending a school/university within South Dakota. Applicants cannot be members of the Brookings Public Arts Commission.
