About This Call

The City of Denver's Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create a series of original, pedestrian-scaled works of art for the improved Broadway Boulevard streetscape in Denver. The corridor runs from 7th Avenue south to Center Avenue along Broadway Boulevard. The commission amount is $100,000 USD.

Broadway is a main thoroughfare and critical spine in Denver's street network, home to an eclectic mix of locally owned businesses including restaurants, galleries, music venues, and bookstores. The section included in this project is surrounded by three distinct neighborhoods: Baker, Washington Park West, and Speer. Since 2015, Denver Public Works has been studying Broadway to make the corridor more multi-modal. In 2019, the City began designing improvements including a two-way bikeway on the east side and rebuilding 13 intersections to improve safety for all users.

The selection panel is looking for three-dimensional artworks in materials suitable for outdoor display. The panel is not looking for two-dimensional artworks or large-scale sculptural works. Artworks should highlight the sense of place along the corridor, demonstrate understanding of Broadway's eclectic spirit, and be designed to be enjoyed by diverse groups including families and young professionals. Works should create moments that connect the corridor while respecting streetscape functionality and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, using highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for outdoor exposure and potential vandalism. Finalists will be reviewed by the City of Denver's Public Art Committee for conformity with city standards and ADA compliance.

This project is open to artists currently living and working in the United States. Emerging artists, Colorado-based artists, and artists working in pedestrian-scaled media suitable for outdoor display are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants may apply as a single artist or multi-person collaborative group. Applicants must submit six digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest no longer than 2,000 characters via www.callforentry.org. The selection panel will select up to five finalists who will create site-specific proposals and participate in interviews with the panel. Finalists will receive an honorarium for this work and will be required to submit a Diversity & Inclusiveness Form. The selected artist or team will collaborate with Public Art Program staff and the Broadway Boulevard design and construction team when finalizing designs for installation.
