About This Call

Breckenridge Grand Vacations, in partnership with Breckenridge Creative Arts, is issuing a Request for Qualifications and Proposals (RFQ&P) from individual artists or artist teams to design and implement a monumental figurative sculpture in a site-specific, outdoor location at the base of Peak 8 of the Ten Mile Range in Breckenridge, Colorado. The commissioned work will be an artistic interpretation of Ullr, the Norse god of snow. This is a high visibility, high traffic opportunity with millions of guests utilizing the area annually. The location is one of the most notable and prominent public spaces within the Breckenridge community.

The budget for this project is $250,000, inclusive of all costs including research, professional consultations, structural and electrical engineering reports (required), a long-term care and maintenance report from a licensed professional conservator (required), materials, fabrication, transportation, travel, insurance, installation, photography, and documentation. The commission is open to professional artists 18 years of age and over. Artist teams may apply and must designate one artist as the lead contact. All artists must have a minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated professional visual art experience and must have examples of previous experience with large-scale outdoor sculpture or sculptural installation projects.

The selection committee seeks an artistic interpretation relating to Ullr in a representational or figurative form, interpreted in a contemporary and dynamic way. Because of its prominent location surrounded by the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the work should explore the subject's relationship with nature and be integrated with the environment and local landscape. A wide variety of materials will be considered, including cast iron, stainless steel, aluminum, and bronze. The minimum desired height for the final sculpture is 15 feet or more from ground (inclusive of installation base) and must be viewable from 360 degrees. All proposed work must be designed to withstand an outdoor, unmonitored, high traffic environment requiring minimal maintenance. Applications must be submitted electronically through www.breckreate.org/opportunities by July 31, 2018, and must include a resume, artist statement, letter of interest, list of three professional references, and six digital images of original completed artwork.
