About This Call
Breckenridge Creative Arts is issuing a Request for Qualifications and Proposals (RFQ&P) from individual artists or artist teams to design and implement an original, medium-scale public artwork using the theme of "snowboarding" to be installed on an outdoor site in Breckenridge, Colorado. This is a memorial commission meant to honor a local athlete and snowboard enthusiast while celebrating the joy and adventure of winter sports and their importance to the community. Up to three artists will be selected as semifinalists to develop and present design proposals, each receiving a $750 stipend. The winning artist will be awarded a contract for $50,000-$100,000, depending on their proposal, and will be responsible for creation and installation of the final work.
Eligibility is open to professional artists 18 years of age and over. Artist teams may apply and must designate one artist as the lead contact. All artists must have a minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated professional visual art experience and must have examples of previous experience with large-scale outdoor sculpture or sculptural installation projects. The selection committee seeks an artistic interpretation relating to snowboarding that explores the subject's relationship with nature and is integrated with the environment and local landscape. Artwork should reflect the subject in a representational or figurative form, interpreted in a contemporary and dynamic way. Traditional representational figurative bronze sculpture is discouraged.
Design parameters include a wide variety of materials such as cast iron, stainless steel, aluminum, bronze, and recycled snowboards. Design elements may include free-standing sculpture, interactive objects, integrated or accessory lighting, decorative pavers, aggregate, stained concrete or other ground design elements. Minimum desired height for the final sculpture is 5' or more from ground (inclusive of installation base) and viewable from 360 degrees. All proposed work must be designed to withstand an outdoor, unmonitored, high traffic environment requiring minimal maintenance. The budget of $50,000-$100,000 is inclusive of all costs including research, professional consultations, formal reports from Colorado-licensed structural and electrical engineers, a long-term care and maintenance report from a licensed professional conservator, materials, fabrication, transportation, travel, insurance, installation, photography and documentation.
Applications must be submitted electronically through www.breckreate.org/opportunities by February 28, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. MST and must include: resume (up to 5 pages demonstrating minimum five years professional art experience), artist statement (1-page maximum), letter of interest (1-page maximum), list of three professional references (1-page maximum), and six digital images of original completed artwork demonstrating qualifications. Each image submission must include the value of the work/commission amount. Teams may submit a total of six images with at least one image from every team member. The selection committee will evaluate submissions based on artistic excellence and originality, appropriateness of artist's medium and style to project goals, experience with similar scale projects, and ability to participate in design and implementation. Notifications are anticipated for late April 2019.
