About This Call
Breaking the Bronze Ceiling is a Request for Qualifications seeking individual artists, designers, or art/design teams to create a three-dimensional permanent outdoor artwork celebrating the history of the Women's Suffrage movement and women's contributions to Lexington's history. The monument will be installed in a prominent downtown Lexington location in 2020 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and recognize the role Lexington/Fayette County women played in that historic event. Less than 7% of the 5,193 monuments in the United States presently recognize women, and there are currently none in Lexington.
Eligibility: Artists must be 18 or older with a U.S. Federal Tax ID and appropriate artist and business insurance. The RFQ deadline is May 15, 2019. Submissions should include a letter of interest (2 pages maximum), current professional resume (2 pages maximum), at least three professional references, and six to ten recent/relevant images of previous work. All digital images should be submitted as jpg or pdf files through CallforEntry.org.
After jury review, three to five artists will be selected as finalists for Phase II, the Request for Proposals. Selected finalists will receive a $2,000 award upon receipt of a qualifying proposal and a travel allowance of up to $750 to visit the site. Proposals are due September 1, 2019, and should include a written conceptual framework, digital rendering, small-scale 3-D model/maquette, timeline and budget for production and installation, and maintenance estimates. The final artist(s) will be chosen in November 2019. Project budget is up to $500,000. Contact Nathan Zamarron at [email protected] with questions.
