About This Call

The Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics is hosting "Breaking (not) Bad," a juried exhibition featuring works by artists who work in picassiette, up-cycled, repurposed, or non-traditional mosaic materials. Artists creating works out of broken or repurposed materials are part of a tradition referred to as 'junk art,' born out of rebellion and the freedom to make art of almost anything. In contemporary mosaic arts, picassiette or the use of up-cycling broken ware is a specific form of expression among many practitioners. Although it can be a materially driven art form, the up-cycling of broken ware has more emotional reasoning behind the artist's choices of broken or unbroken shards and objects that may have a personal connection.

The exhibition runs from November 25, 2022 to January 14, 2023. Entry deadline is October 28, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Entry fee is $30.00 per application, with up to 3 applications allowed. Artists must submit at least two photos per application (one overall and one detail image). Each application is for one piece; additional pieces can be submitted by emailing [email protected] for $5 off the next submission. All work must be of original design with no copies, reproductions, or copyrighted material. Decorative art including tables, mirrors, vases, and boxes will not be considered. Work must be ready to hang and properly wired upon arrival. 2D work must not exceed 36 inches in either direction without frame and 25 lbs. 3D work must be stable and able to be secured on a 12-inch square pedestal. Images should be submitted digitally in 300 dpi jpeg format.

All exhibited works must be for sale with a 40% commission to GoCM. Artists are responsible for shipping and insuring accepted work in a sturdy, reusable box or crate with no packing peanuts. Return shipping and insurance must be prepaid with labels included. Hand deliveries are due no later than November 18, 2022. GoCM is not responsible for loss, damage, or deterioration of artwork while in its possession. Work not picked up 10 days after the show ends will not be returned. The exhibition is open to all mosaic artists.
