About This Call

The City of Deerfield Beach will commission 3 artists for the design and installation of 3 separate 3D sculptures/pieces to be located throughout the Branhilda Richardson-Knowles Memorial Park and Historic Cemetery at 411 SE 2nd St., Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. The park was originally a cemetery used by African Americans from the late 1890s to 1930s. When the property was purchased for development, the City chose to create a passive park as a sacred place for the community to reflect on this historic legacy and Bahamian heritage. The park has three main gardens commemorating those buried there, Branhilda Richardson Knowles (a local midwife), and veterans.

Artists should focus on the history and somber nature of this green space when creating their 3D pieces. Sculptures can be created in any medium the artist deems appropriate. The artwork must be able to receive a building permit, and artwork attachments and footings must be drawn by a design professional to meet the 2017 Florida Building Code High Velocity Wind Zone requirements (170mph wind, exposure C, ASCE 7-10). Applicants must demonstrate how the art piece will be installed. All pieces must be complete and ready for installation by June 1, 2020.

Each of the three selected pieces is budgeted at approximately $40,000, which must include insurance, shipping, installation, and any equipment needed for completion. City staff will review and inspect designs before and during installation, determine exact placement within the park, and provide the necessary concrete base for securing the pieces. Work samples should include 3-6 images of the actual proposed piece and up to 3 videos.
