About This Call

The Boulder Public Library Main Branch at 1001 Arapahoe Avenue is seeking applicants for a public art opportunity to be integrated into the new renovation design efforts by Denver architecture firm studiotroup Design Collective. The budget for this project is not to exceed $150,000 and is open to all artists 18 years or older residing in the United States. The library, a compilation of three building efforts starting in 1961 with additions completed in 1974 and 1990, will undergo renovation guided by the architectural concept "Stream of Serendipity," which embodies unexpected delightful experiences and improved navigation through the building.

The Public Art Selection Panel seeks to commission an artist or artist team to develop an art project that punctuates the initial user experience and continues throughout the building as "discovery events" or a narrative of visual experiences. Art locations include both interior and exterior opportunities in adult, teen, and children's areas. The selected artist or team will work with the design team to establish appropriate locations for art integration. The goal is to commission a unique artwork or set of artworks that communicate the Library's specialized place in the community as a location for discovery and dialogue. All media and materials will be considered, including audio and video.

Applicants must submit six digital images, a one-page résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. The selection panel will choose no more than 4 semifinalists for interviews. If a formal proposal is required, an honorarium will be offered to cover expenses including travel. The total budget of $150,000 USD may be reduced if honorariums are paid to semifinalists. The selected artist will enter into a contractual agreement with the City of Boulder for design, fabrication, transportation, and installation. Tentative timeline: Initial Project Review September 10th; Artist Interviews September 16th-23rd. There is no application fee.
