Bloedel Reserve Artists in Residency Program 2016

Bloedel Reserve is accepting applications for its 2017 Artists in Residency Program. The residency offers participants long stretches of uninterrupted time in a tranquil environment on 150 acres of landscaped gardens and native woodlands on Bainbridge Island, Washington, a 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle. The program will host 10 residents with residency durations ranging from three to four weeks. Applicants should indicate their preferred season or note if their schedule is flexible.

The residency program is open to professional and emerging artists, composers, writers, botanists, landscape architects, researchers, and others exploring themes of nature and the human connection with nature. Residents are not expected to create a finished project but should use the time for inspiration. An outreach component is required, which can take the form of a public reading, workshop, performance, or similar community engagement.

Artists in Residence are housed in a comfortable home with natural lighting, a kitchen stocked with essentials, living room and bedroom furniture, bathroom with shower facilities, Wi-Fi, and laundry facilities. All linens are supplied, and once-weekly cleaning is provided. There is no dedicated studio space; artists use the residency building as their studio, so large or messy projects are not suitable. A smart car is made available for residents' use. Bloedel does not offer stipends but provides accommodations and unlimited access to the gardens. Residents are responsible for all travel expenses and meals. Spouses/partners may stay one night per week of residency; day visitors receive four guest passes per week. The entry fee is $20.00. Work samples may include up to 8 images, 3 audio files, and 3 video files (8 total samples maximum).
