About This Call
Ashton Gallery @ Art on 30th, a contemporary art center and gallery in San Diego, California, invites regional and national artists to submit original works of art for the 5th annual "Blackout" national exhibition. Works featuring dominant black or black in a prominent way are eligible. The exhibition runs November 8 - December 5, 2025, with an opening reception on Saturday, November 8 from 4pm-7pm.
Eligible mediums include acrylic, oils, watercolor, drawing, photography, assemblage, collage, encaustic, mixed media, fiber art, and 3D art that fits on an 18" x 18" pedestal. Artwork must be between 10" and 72" in size, original, and ready for sale. All entries must be wired and ready-to-hang with two D-rings on the back. Artists should sign, title, and add artwork size and medium on the backside of the piece. The gallery does not accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, or installations.
Entry fee is $40 for the first entry and $5 for each additional image (up to 6 pieces total). Submit one image per entry online through CaFÉ before 10:59 PM Pacific on September 15, 2025. Juror decisions will be notified by email by September 30, 2025. Three awards and two honorable mentions will be given by juror Daniel Foster, with $1,000 in cash prizes. Selected works will be published in the Ashton Gallery full-color exhibition catalog. Best in Show will be featured on the catalog cover, while First Place, Juror's Choice, and Honorable Mention recipients will receive double page spreads. If artwork sells, Ashton Gallery receives 50% commission. Artwork must remain in the show until closing. Hand-delivered work is accepted through October 18, 2025. Shipping deadline is October 8, 2025. Hand-pickup begins December 5, 2025, and unsold artwork shipping begins December 10, 2025.
