About This Call
The James Wise Gallery at Norfolk State University invites artists worldwide to submit work for the exhibition Black Prometheus: The Legacy of Jacob Lawrence and Global Modernist Art of the Mid-Twentieth Century. This exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Chrysler Museum of Art's exhibition Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence & The Mbari Club. In addition to the gallery exhibition, several events will be hosted with the Chrysler, including a MarketPlace night and a Mbari night featuring dancers, fashion, food, vendors, and activities.
Submissions should be inspired by the work of Jacob Lawrence, the Mbari Artists & Writers Club, or modernist artists from around the world, revealing the influence of post-colonialism and the globalization of the modern world during the mid-twentieth century. This can be through style, explorations of similar sociopolitical issues, cultural identities, or art practices during the post-colonial era. The exhibition is open to artists worldwide of all mediums, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, fiber, and mixed media. Applicants may submit up to two artworks created within the last five years (or from the mid-twentieth century). All styles and sizes are welcome.
Entry fee is $25 for up to two artworks; additional artworks can be submitted for $5 each. Submissions must include images of the artwork(s), an artist statement, and an artist biography. Jurying will be done blindly based solely on artwork images. Awards with monetary prizes include Best of Show, First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention. Jury deliberation will be completed by October 4. Artwork must arrive at the gallery by October 18. Exhibition dates are October 21 – November 23, 2022.
