About This Call
The Library, Arts & Culture Department of the City of Glendale is accepting proposals from qualified candidates for Black History Month – Call for Artists. Artists of all artistic genres, art organizations, or schools within the Southern California region may submit proposals.
The Library and Arts & Culture Commission are committed to developing programming that amplifies cultural voices through a lens of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). This inaugural Black History Month - Call for Artists focuses on magnifying Black artists and the Black experience. Proposed artwork may be visual, musical, performance-based, social, experiential, environmental, sensory, or streetscape/mural art. The artwork may be a one-time event or temporary installation, or a series of events or installations. Individual project budgets up to $10,000 per project will be considered, with a total allocation of $20,000 budgeted for the entire call.
Applications must be completed online at www.glendaleartsandculture.org and include a detailed proposal description, artist statement, resume or biography, digital images or sketches of the proposed project in JPEG format, digital images of past artworks and/or installations, and a detailed project budget. For streetscape or mural art, the proposer must provide privately-owned property, secure owner permission if not the property owner, secure a sign permit, and secure design review approval. Murals shall not contain any letters, numbers, or symbols that constitute advertisement or commercial message. For performance art on private property, the proposer must include owner permission if applicable. If sound-amplifying equipment is used, a registration statement and amplified sound approval must be secured. Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of Arts & Culture Commissioners and City of Glendale representatives based on alignment with Black History Month theme (35%), proposal fit (25%), audience (25%), and local preference (15%). Selected finalists will be notified by email and must sign a Temporary Art Display Agreement contract.
