About This Call
Birds of the Rocky Mountain Region II is a juried art competition running April 19 to June 29, 2025, focusing on the diversity and variety of more than 275 bird species found in the Rocky Mountain Region, including migratory birds. Artists are encouraged to submit up to 3 entries. Eligible mediums include oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pastel, drawing, printmaking processes (no digital art), bronze, glass, ceramics, stone, and mixed-media. Photography is not eligible. Preference will be given to submissions that best represent the nature or essence of the species through realism, abstraction, or contemporary interpretation. Artwork must be available for sale, with artists receiving 70% of the selling price and The Brinton Museum retaining a 30% sales commission.
Three jurors will select up to 45 pieces for exhibit: ornithologist L. Scott Johnson Ph.D., internationally-known artist and master leather artisan James F. Jackson (2019 National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award Recipient), and Barbara J. McNab, former Curator of Exhibitions at The Brinton Museum. Show awards include Best of Show ($1,000), Rocky Mountain Award ($500), The Brinton Museum Award ($250), and Bighorn Audubon Award ($250). A color-illustrated catalog with biographical information on participating artists and educational commentary about birds represented in the exhibition will accompany the show.
Eligibility is open to artists residing in the United States. Entry fee is $40. Submit 2-3 high-resolution images of works representative of bird species found in the Rocky Mountain Region. 2-D work cannot exceed 24 inches (framed) in any dimension; 3-D work cannot exceed 15 inches in any dimension. Accepted artists must provide biographical information and an artist's statement not to exceed 300 words. Delivery of art is due March 25, 2025. Artists are notified of accepted entries February 12. An Artists' Reception takes place April 18 at 4:30 PM.
