About This Call

The City of Santa Clarita is seeking artists to design and create a functional bike rack sculpture for the Canyon Country Community Center, located at the intersection of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway in Santa Clarita, California. The project is funded through a partnership with the Environmental Services division, allocating $8,000 in forfeited construction and demolition deposit funds. Due to the specific funding source, the bike rack must incorporate at least 60 percent recycled materials into the design and fabrication.

The selected bike rack should be a functional sculpture with two points of contact for bikes to be secured to and should accommodate a minimum of eight bikes. The design should be surface mounted and not require footings to stand securely. The artwork should be original, site-specific, complementary to the surrounding area, and made with durable, low-maintenance materials that will withstand public use, hot weather, and natural elements in Santa Clarita. The installed artwork should reach a level of permanency with a minimum of 25 years duration.

Artists 18 years of age or older are invited to submit individual or collaborative applications. Artists must have at least one completed public art project in three-dimensional format. Submissions must include a cover letter, resume, description of past works, artist statement, and portfolio of 5-10 images of past work (video up to three files and audio up to two files accepted). The Artist Selection Committee will select three to five semi-finalists to interview, each receiving a $250 honorarium. The selected artist will be responsible for all design, fabrication, transportation, travel, hotel accommodations, insurance coverage during installation, and any protective coating costs. The $8,000 budget can be paid in two or three installments, with final payment after project completion. Installation is expected in 2020-2021 and must occur before the Canyon Country Community Center opens. The artwork will have a public dedication ceremony and be promoted through SantaClaritaArts.com and other social media sites.
